I know the idea of a vaccination is to give a person an “altered” or “weakened” case of a particular disease. In response, the person’s immune system builds up defensive components (antibodies) that render the person more “immune”.
Your body’s immune system is what protects you against the disease—not the vaccine. Sometimes vaccines can “backfire”. That is, if your own immune system is too weak or deficient to fight off the elements of the disease in the vaccine, then your body may be damaged or challenged as a result.
Does this mean that nobody should take vaccines? No, there are instances when we do and perhaps should, but people should also understand and recognize that vaccines are not a panacea, and they may come with risk.
So whether you choose to vaccinate your children or get flu shots, as examples, or not, it is important to build and maintain a strong immune system response. Your immune system is the real hero in prevention, not vaccinations!
