Acidity and alkalinity are at opposite ends of the chemical spectrum known as the pH scale. The scale gets its name from the term, “potential of hydrogen”, meaning the amount of hydrogen ions in that solution. The pH scale ranges from 0 (extremely acidic) to 14 (extremely alkaline), with 7 being neutral. Low pH means high hydrogen ion concentration (acidity) and high pH means low hydrogen ion concentration (alkalinity).
The pH level of human blood is 7.365 (mildly alkaline). Our survival as humans depends upon our body being able to maintain this delicate balance between alkalinity and acidity. Unfortunately, the diet consumed throughout North America is composed of foods and beverages that are highly acidic. Some bottled beverages, especially cola drinks, energy drinks, sport beverages, Vitamin Water, Gatorade and the like are “crazy” acidic. You also might be surprised to learn that many brands of bottled water are also very acidic.
If we become overburdened with acidity through the foods and beverages we consume, the body must draw from finite alkaline reserves in order to restore our delicate pH balance as quickly as possible.
